For this puzzle the designer wanted just three plain colours, so that the details he added would enhance, not detract, from the solving experience.
The story is that a Sorcerer erected a magical barrier to keep his Shoggoths from fighting (or mating...ew). After foolish humans destroy the lair, it is up to the puzzle solver to rebuild the barrier and keep those monsters separated.
