Icosahedron Built on the skewb mechanism by Tony Fisher.
The puzzle was constructed by first sculpting the three new masters out of solid polyester resin. This was done with files, saw and sand paper. No rapid prototyping was used and not even a Dremel. Angled pieces of plastic were used to check the edge to face angles and face to face angles but besides that no other maths was used. It was more about sculpting the pieces by eye than a technical geometric build.
The parts themselves were originally cast hollow in polyester resin from remeltable rubber (Gelflex) moulds. Tony choose for Rubik's Cube style stickers sometimes using six colours doubling up on opposite faces and sometimes using twelve.
Although the the pieces look asymmetrically, this puzzle does not change its shape. This is due to fact that the tetrahedral symmetries (which the Skewb's mechanism obeys) compose a subgroup of the icosahedral symmetries which the shape obeys.
Edge length: 55mm
Weight: 278g
