The puzzles name is a portmanteau of Axis Cube and Pyramorphix. And indeed the puzzle was an Axis Cube modified like the pyramorphix was transformed from the 3x3x3.
Image 4 is a sample Apurva Pavaskar built at the same time as Gerardo but published the finished sample later.
