Simplicity rules! This is probably the simplest but still working mechanism for a 2x2x2: Eight unconnected pieces in a cage.

The inventor patented this puzzle in 2005 but revealed it no later than 2008. Depending on the point of view this puzzle has more permutations than the usual 2x2x2 by a factor of 24. This is due to the cage which makes the global orientation within the cage visible to the puzzler.
