Octaminx

A fairly accessible custom shape variant of the Pyraminx.

Originally named Mini Octahedron, Tony Fisher later decided to rename it Octaminx.
The Octaminx can be made from a Meffert's Pyraminx. Instead Tony used a Tetraminx since there are no trivial tips to get rid of. He truncated the puzzle without adding any required parts. It is necessary though to shorten the screws and remove the ball bearings. Tony used Skewb style stickers with four colours, doubling up on opposite faces.
It was made in 1996. In 1999 Dieter Gebhardt suggested that Tony made the Truncated Octaminx, an even more truncated shape transformation. See the separate in the museum.
Images 2-7 show the building process of the puzzle:
2: Filing down the tip in a rather crude, but very effective, manner. Tony used masking tape to keep the puzzle tight during all the stress. This used to be a Tetraminx.
3: At first the builder of this sample was not cut deeply enough.
4: All faces filed down correctly. The original screws are way too long, and since they aren't threaded all the way, new screws have to be found.
5: A screw donor. The Cuboctahedron itself was transformed into an Extended Cuboctahedron. The screw holes had to be deepend to allow room for the screw head and a spring.
6: The raw completed mechanism. It needs a lot of fine tuning
7: Filling in the holes with some modelling clay. Then sanding.
Edge length: 52 mm
