This puzzle was designed by Katsuhiko Okamoto and Takafumi Haseda. Its alternative name "Latch Cube II" indiciates which preceeding design inspired the two to come up with this concept.
The first design of this concept was presented in 2010. See the 6th image.
The puzzle became available with a different but equivalent design in 2012. Coincicentially selling of the mass produced Constrained Cubes started in the same time frame. This is important because one of the mass produced variants of the Constrained Cubes is equivalent to the Quarter Cube.
