The front and back form two independent puzzles. The centre circle is fixed, and it is the plate with the 8 arms that turns around it. The centre circle has a gap that is big enough to hold one extra piece, but not two.

The hidden bit of the mechanism is this: The top piece of the top arm can be pushed down, a bit like one of the balls in the Babylon Tower. While that does create an extra space, the real trick comes when you then turn the plate - the piece that was pushed in remains in place so that it joins whichever arm is rotated to the top.

There are at least three versions. They have different colours on the tiles of the back side.
Colours known so far are: Green, red and blue.

The first year of production is unknown but Jerry Slocum acquired his sample in 1982.

The instructions read:
Instruction for Eight-pole Wisdom Plate.
Characteristics: This toy is very helpful in opening up one's intelligence and for killing time. It does not occupy much space and is easy to carry. It can also be used for decoration.
How to play: It has two sides: side A for colour variation & side B for mathematical games. Each side is divided into inner part and outer part for adjustment. The inside part has four spaces. You can adjust it at each of the eight corners. The outer part is hidden style. If you have to change the side, just press down (one direction of the handle) and turn the joint over to make it change. For example: If you want to make a colour slice to a certain position, you have to move away the colour slice at that position first. If there is no colour slice at that position, the colour slice will automatically jump up.
Numerical games: How to numerals into vertical 8 spaces, horizontal 8 spaces, right slant 6 spaces, left slant 6 spaces and four sides (outer 8 spaces, center 8 spaces, inner 8 spaces and inner 4 spaces) that have same total and to make four sides 8 sections have equal totale depend on how smart you are.
