All,

You've seen a few of these already but I haven't yet had the time to give it a formal introduction. So here is the Bubblism521 puzzle.
Bubbloid521_B.png
Bubbloid521_C.png
Here you can see it next to its cousin the Bubbloid122 puzzle (or I guess if you want to you could call it the Bubblism421 as its also a square prism).
Bubbloid521_A.png
The rectangular faces are the exact same size between these 2 puzzles. Namely 60mm by 72.43mm. But the Pentagonal faces aren't flat so the puzzle is 90.97mm tall when sitting on a pentagonal face. The pentagonal faces are actually 10 triangular faces with a small pentagonal face at the center. This was done to keep all the edge pieces identical. So the edges shared between a pentagonal face and a rectangular face are the exact same shape as the edges shared between 2 rectangular faces.

Here it is shown mid-turn:

And after 2 turns:
Bubbloid521_E.png
You will note that this is a jumbling puzzle. It weighs in at 152 grams without the screws in it yet or the caps being glued on.

The puzzle is currently available on Shapeways here:
http://www.shapeways.com/model/2003642/bubblism521.html
And I hope to get it on i.materialise soon.

Enjoy,
Carl

I wish I had the money to buy some of your puzzles Carl. But then again, I don't because then I'd have no money left over :D .

OMG! €645 for one puzzle! Did you really pay that?

If only there was a reasonable alternative to Shapeways with decent prices - this puzzle looks fantastic!

Great looking puzzle Carl! Just like all the other bubbloids :D Absolutely beautiful.

I'm curious how well this can be scrambled - it appears to get highly bandaged very quickly.

I believe any state in reachable that would be reachable if this were doctrinaire. In fact the jumbling on this is very easy to deal with. No mater how jumbled it becomes its trivial to restore back to the hexagonal prism state. All the edges are identical in shape so you just need to turn the corner pieces back to their home position.

If fact I think one could define a move on this puzzle in such a way that it could be considered doctrinaire. Look at the last image I posted. In that image I turned the top left corner and then the top right corner. If I wanted to restore this puzzle to its hexagonal prism state I have two choice:

(1) Restore the top right corner to home then restore the top left corner to home.
(2) Restore the top left corner to home then restore the top right corner to home.

Option (1) solves the puzzle and isn't interesting. But option (2) moves pieces around and restores the puzzle to a state where all moves are available again. So I think you could define this set of 4 turns as a single move. This combined with other similarly defined moves could be used to thoroughly scramble the puzzle and you could say it returned to the doctrinaire state between each move.

However I think this breaks the intent of the definition of jumbling and doctrinaire as similar arguments I think could be made to claim all jumbling puzzles were doctrinaire and that the jumbling states were just mid-move states. So I'm more then happy to call this jumbling.

Carl

Thanks.

I also wanted to let everyone know that I have now uploaded the new designs for the Bubblism521 and Bubblism512. Both Bubblisms now have incorporated the improvements discussed here.
http://twistypuzzles.com/forum/viewtopi ... 15&t=27715

For the Bubblism521 these are the Shapeway prices.
Bubblism521_Bare.png
$690.05 WS&F
$844.81 BS&F
$767.43 WS&F-Polished
$844.81 WS&F-Polished/Dyed

The only positive here is that the bare model is cheaper then with a sinterbox or a sintershell so you can still order polished and dyed options.

However anyone interested in just the WS&F version please hold off a bit. It is on i.Materialise and with a Sinterbox it comes to $488.56. I will open it for sale as soon as they ship one to me.

Yes, I'm using a Sculpteo render as it looks nicer then the i.Materialise view but their price doesn't come close to i.Materialise. For comparison purposes the Bubblism521 (the first version) was $252.52 before the priceocalypse. i.Materialise gets us about halfway back there and is $200 cheaper (and don't forget free shipping) then the current best Shapeways can offer.
