Today I'm happy to announce that our new puzzle: Duo Axis Cube-多立方 has been released.
I designed this puzzle in 2014 and built by hand. Now it has been mass produce. First of all I'd like to thank Mr Fok(mf8). That's first puzzle I do a cooperation with Mr Fok.
First batch puzzle was original color(only first batch), will be ready for sale in one week later.

I love how the endresult looks all stickered up, especially the look of the seemingly random cuts.
But the prototype: Wow! That marble look is simply stunning!

you are correct, and i was also a little surprised to see this.
the original is initially turnable only as a 3x3x3, not as a 3x3x5, and requires reorienting some split edges and corners to fully scramble (and solve). the mass-produced version doesn't require this, and (i think) it's an easier puzzle because of it.

May be they consider it too difficult? While mass producing a puzzle a business always have to worry about how playable is their puzzles. For TP members like us it would be better to make it more difficult, as we can see its nature more easily. But for usual puzzler or potential buyer, it's more acceptable if they know this is somehow a shape mod of a 3x3x5.

I agree this might have been their reasoning, but it seems like flawed logic to me. I think TP members are the largest client segment for non WCA puzzles like the Duo Axis cube... and since we're looking for a challenge, making it easier probably makes the cube less attractive

Hmm.. I try to do this but I realise that it's not completely possible. I used the picture in the museum (I suppose we can call this the original Duo Axis). It's the kind of paired pieces marked in the picture below. There is three variation and the new one use two of each but the original don't. This is ofcourse a minor issue but still...
It's a wonderful and fun puzzle.

Did A J post a picture of the other side? This is the closest I was able to make mine but as mentioned above, it doesn't match the pictures of the original.

No, he never posted a picture of the other side.
I haven't tried to re-assemble it into the original version by myself yet.

The Duo Axis cube is now also available in transparent red plastic, at HKNowStore and ZCube.

Has there been more "research" into reassembling / restickering it into the "original" form, since these last messages in January? And if so, would it be possible to take an unstickered red Duo Axis, reshape it as needed without stickers, and then sticker it with the stickers that come with it?

yes, it's possible to rebuild it into AJ's original configuration, with the minor exception of one flat corner group, and one flat edge group (the triangular group of four pieces on the righthand face of the puzzle in your photo), for which the diagonal cut is reversed in both. i just rebuilt mine as a test, and this was the only difference.

- however -

no, it's not possible to use the stickers that come with the puzzle on this configuration. but i'm sure chewbacca or Olivér could help out on this (depending on where you live), for those who want the challenge of the Original Duo Axis Cube...which mf8 apparently decided was too much of a challenge.
